Surf Contest Basics

The WaveMasters Surf Contest has been going on for 29 years. In that time, it has grown into one of the best surfing competitions in Northeast Florida. Of course, that’s just my opinion. What makes it so great is the talent that it draws to Jacksonville Beach. Last year’s pro surfing contests attracted the likes of surfers Jake McGuire, Kayla Durden and longboarder Steve Mclean. Need further proof about what kind of surfing talent comes out of Northeast Florida? Just take a look at Jacksonville native Asher Nolan. The man was amazing at the 2011 Quiksilver Pro New York Trials. At this point, a list of expected surfers has yet to be released. Therefore, surf fans should stay tuned to the WaveMasters’ website for future updates. Amateur surfers looking to compete in the surf event should also visit the event’s website and make contact with the contest’s director. In addition to the surfing contests, an epic beach raffle is also planned. As such, visitors will have a chance to score sweet looking surfboards, skateboards and other goodies.

Good to Know Before You Go

Visiting surf fans will typically find superlative beach access and public parking along First Street. Public restrooms are available on 5th Avenue North and 2nd Avenue North. I should mention that grills and coolers are usually allowed onto Jacksonville Beach. Just be sure to leave the adult beverages and glass bottles at home as they are not. Plenty of lodging and camping facilities are located in the general area. One place of note is the Quality Suites Oceanfront on North First Street. It has excellent beach access and you can rent beach chairs and beach umbrellas onsite. By the way, renting two beach chairs and an umbrella will typically set you back $50.

Florida Surf Contests on the Horizon

Can’t make it Jax Beach on May 5, 2012? Don’t despair. There is a beach bag full of surfing contests planned in Jacksonville between now and October 2012. Some of the upcoming surfing events of note include the Super Grom Surf Festival and the Sisters of the Sea. Both are expected to take place at the Jax Beach Pier. The Super Grom Surf Festival is slated to take place on June 16, July 14 and August 11. The Sisters of the Sea is anticipated to take place on September 8, 2012.
